Seeing Through Soot Richard Dahl Abstract image credit: PhotoDisc Soot, the black dust often associated with Charles Dickens novels and chimney sweeps, has plagued humankind since the discovery of fire. Although scientific evidence linking soot to harmful human and environmental health effects is mounting, researchers find it hard to study soot because of the variety of conditions under which it is produced. Work is under way to develop synthetic soot with properties of real-world particulate matter that can be used by scientists and industrial engineers in creating models and diagnostic tools to measure soot and its effects.
